What is Holistic Dentistry?
Holistic dentistry also called biological dentistry, biologic dentistry, alternative dentistry, unconventional dentistry, or biocompatible dentistry is the equivalent of complementary and alternative medicine for dentistry. Holistic dentistry emphasizes approaches to dental care said to consider dental health in the context of the patient's entire physical as well as emotional or spiritual health in some cases. Although the holistic dental community is diverse in its practices and approaches, common threads include strong opposition to the use of amalgam in materials in dental fillings, nonsurgical approaches to gum disease, and the belief that root canals may endanger systemic health of the patient through the spread of trapped dental bacteria to the body
This approach to Dentistry encompasses both modern science and knowledge drawn from the worlds great traditions on natural healing...Holistic Dentistry acknowledges and deals with the mind, body, and spirit of the patient, not just his or her "Teeth"
It lays out the following basic principles:
- Proper nutrition for the prevention and reversal of degenerative dental disease
- Avoidance and elimination of toxins from dental materials
- Prevention and treatment of dental malocclusion (bite problems=physical imbalance)
- Prevention and treatment of gum disease at its biological basis
Examples of Holistic Dental Treatments and Materials include
Mercury free fillings - Removing and replacing the standard mercury based fillings is one of the major treatments offered by holistic dentists .Alternatives include composite resin, glass ionomer, porcelain, and gold, among other options. Most people choose direct composite fillings because the white colouring matches the tooth better and the cost is considered moderate.
Grey Metal free crowns Alternative material for dental crowns
Zirconia implants - Zirconia dental implants are typically marketed as a non-metal, “ceramic” material that is white in color like natural teeth . Zirconia implants come in the form of Zirconium Oxide (which is often referred to as Zirconia).
Treatment of Headache / migraines - Studies have shown that a common factor in migraine and tension headaches and neckaches may be chronic clenching or grinding. of the teeth. You may be suffering from Noises in your jaw joints ,Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
, Earache or Pains in your face which could be as a result of poor dental heath.
Sleep Apnoea - is a
sleep disorder characterized by
pauses in breathing or periods of
shallow breathing during
sleep. Each pause can last for a few seconds to a few minutes and they happen many times a night. In the most common form, this follows loud
snoring .There may be a choking or snorting sound as breathing resumes. As the disorder disrupts normal sleep, those affected may experience sleepiness or feel tired during the day.[ In children it may cause problems in school, or hyperactivity. (Source Wikipedia) .
Studies have shown a link between dental health and sleep apnea . One of the first signs of sleep apnea is often tooth grinding (also called bruxism). Your dentist can check for worn tooth surfaces, which is an indication that a patient grinds his or her teeth. The grinding can cause tooth wear and breakage as well as inflamed and receding gums. A spike in cavities can also be a sign of grinding because the force damages teeth, making them susceptible to cavity-causing bacteria. (Please be aware that while dentists are well trained in the treatment of Sleep Apnoea only a medical doctor is able to diagnose the condition)
